Course Introduction

The Master of Counselling programme in the Faculty of Education is a skill-based programme suited to those with an interest in counselling. The programme is taught by academics with extensive experience working as professional counsellors or psychologists, and it offers a professional qualification and an authentic counselling experience. It is suitable for people from a variety of professions such as counselling, psychology or social work. An integral component of the programme involves gaining professional experience, providing you with an opportunity to apply theory to practice under supervision in clinical settings.

Class may commence with fewer students than indicated above, subject to resource availability. In the event of cancellation, you will be notified at least 1 week before the programme commencement date, stated in your student contract with Kaplan, and our consultants will contact you to advise on a backup plan.

Telehealth and Technology in Counselling

Supervised Counselling Placement A and B are field placements (practicums) for professional experience in counselling. Students must complete the required number of hours and the activities specified in the professional experience guide for these modules. Student learning is supported by professional practice consultants, coordinators and supervisors. These modules track the requirements for completing professional experience in the programme and during supervised placements in the fields.
While assistance will be provided, students are encouraged to secure their own practical placement with counselling agencies or social service centres. Cost of on-site or individual practicum supervision is negotiable between students and their supervisors and will be borne and paid directly by students to their supervisors.

72-Credit Point Programme

An Australian Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) with at least a distinction (70% average) and a minimum of 2 years of full-time equivalent relevant professional experience; OR
An Australian Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in a related discipline including Counselling, Psychology or Social Work with at least a distinction (70% average); OR
A 4-year Australian Honours Bachelor’s Degree or an Australian Graduate Certificate or an Australian Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) with at least a distinction (70% average); OR
An Australian Master’s Degree (or equivalent) with at least a distinction (70% average).

48-Credit Point Programme

An Australian Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in a related discipline including Counselling, Psychology or Social Work with at least a distinction (70% average) and a minimum of 2 years of full-time equivalent relevant professional experience; OR
A 4-year Australian Honours Bachelor’s Degree or an Australian Graduate Certificate or an Australian Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) with at least a distinction (70% average) and a minimum of 2 years of full-time equivalent relevant professional experience; OR
A 4-year Australian Honours Bachelor’s Degree or an Australian Graduate Certificate or an Australian Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) in a related discipline including Counselling, Psychology or Social Work with at least a distinction (70% average); OR
An Australian Master’s Degree (or equivalent) with at least a distinction (70% average) and a minimum of 2 years of full-time equivalent relevant professional experience; OR
An Australian Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in a related discipline including Counselling, Psychology or Social Work with at least a distinction (70% average).

Applicants who do not meet the Master’s admission requirements will be assessed for entry into the Graduate Certificate of Counselling. Upon completion of the Graduate Certificate of Counselling with a 70% average, students will be admitted into the 48-credit point Master’s Degree programme directly.
In all cases, the final decision on admission to the programme rests with the University.
Language Proficiency

IELTS: 7.0 overall with no band lower than 7.0; OR
Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 65 overall with no band lower than 65; OR
TOEFL Internet-Based Test: score of 98 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 27, Listening: 24, Reading: 24 and Speaking: 23; OR
An equivalent English language test approved by the University

Education Loan

Standard Repayment: Pay your monthly instalments (principal and interest) once your loan is disbursed.
Partial Repayment: Pay partial instalments for up to 3 years or till the end of your programme, whichever is earlier. Standard monthly instalments (principal and interest) will commence thereafter.
Interest Servicing: Pay only interest for up to 3 years or till the end of your programme, whichever is earlier. Standard monthly instalments (principal and interest) will commence thereafter.
